2014 HAS BEEN DECLARED THE YEAR OF TARAS SHEVCHENKO (1814-1861) in Ukraine

The 200th anniversary since the Birthday of the worldwide famous great Ukrainian poet and artist Taras Shevchenko will be commemorated in March, 2014. He is also known under the book name Kobzar, which was given to him by the people after publication of his most famous literary work – a collection of poems entitled Kobzar, first published in 1840 in St. Petersburg.

Kobzars in Ukraine were folk singers (bards) who performed epic works of high civic virtue to the accompaniment of the Ukrainian folk instruments: kobza, bandura or wheel lyre.

Large-scale preparations for commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the Great Kobzar are under way during the last several years.

Within the framework of preparations, the National Centre “Minor Academy of Sciences” announced the All-Ukrainian competition “Rozkryllya Dushі” (“The Soul Wingspans”) among schoolchildren, which has been taking place from April, 2013 till February, 2014. The competition is held in two categories: research work having Taras Shevchenko’s political essays as the object, and creative writing (poetry, essays).
