Priorities of Arts Education in the Republic of Moldova

Arts education is a subsystem, which is a component of the national educational system of the Republic of Moldova. Thus, the structure of arts education has to fit into the general structure of the educational system of the Republic of Moldova. The latter is structured by level and cycle, but also by specific contents in the area.

The arts education consists largely of:

Formal arts education

  • Basic arts education is carried out professionally in educational institutions of all levels (preschool, pre-university, university levels). It comprises both nonprofessional (amateur) education and professional education;
  • Complementary education is carried out in arts schools, music schools and plastic arts schools;
  • Continuous training is carried out using various specific training forms.

Informal arts education

Informal arts education is carried out at Youth and Child Resource Centres, Debate Clubs, Media Centres, Community Centres, Muzeums, Cinema Theatres, Libraries, Theatres, Musical Institutions.

The basic aim of arts education as a continuing process is building creative and art personality abilities.

Basic formal arts education provides training of schoolchildren/students with specific arts abilities and it is carried out in lyceums, colleges and arts profile university level educational institutions.

Art values contribute very much to educating the humanitarian spirit and conscious behavior. They are factors that change and elevate the human spirit. Therefore, arts education is an essential element for humanization and enhancing the general culture of modern people.

Art and cultural education is an essential component of children’s and youth’s education, since it contributes to development of free will, sensitivity and openness towards the others; it also represents a fundamental component of equality of opportunities and a prerequisite for genuine democratization of the access to culture. Regretfully, the economic limitations frequently determine the decision makers of the educational sphere to reduce the role of arts within the general education related policies. In order to allow for the democratization process within the area of access to culture, it is necessary to promote the art awareness at all levels and at any age, along with recognition of the significance of amateur and group art activities and promotion of the access to education in the area of arts. Thus, arts education should become a mandatory component of curriculum at all school levels, while the schools should become again the main place for democratizing the access to culture.
