Introduction to the Arts Education System in the Republic of Moldova

Within the context of its various educational and cultural reforms, the Republic of Moldova aims at redefining its status as a European country, while dramatically revaluating its set of cultural, spiritual and historical values.

Arts education is a subsystem, which is a component of the national educational system of the Republic of Moldova. Thus, the structure of arts education has to fit into the general structure of the educational system of the Republic of Moldova.

The arts education consists largely of formal arts education (basic arts education, which is carried out professionally in educational institutions of all levels, complementary education carried out in arts schools, music schools and plastic arts schools) and informal arts education. Basic formal arts education provides training of schoolchildren/students with specific arts abilities and it is carried out in lyceums, colleges and art profile university level educational institutions.

Due to globalization and due to higher mobility of the people, culture education and its diversity are an important factor for maintaining the identity and for promoting intercultural and inter-confessional understanding.

The basic aim of arts education as a continuing process is building creative and art personality abilities.

All components of education are subject to actions for transformation: the institutional organization, the national curriculum, contents, systems and procedures for evaluation and credit assessment, continuous training of teachers.  Modernization is achieved, largely, based on theoretical and practical materials accumulated individually for each art specialization. However, unification and generalization of efforts is needed to develop a common policy and strategy for development of arts education in the Republic of Moldova.
