19-25 May 2014 UNESCO celebrates International Week of Art Education

Since 2012, every fourth week of May, UNESCO celebrates International Week of Art education. In 2014, the week will be celebrated from 19 to 25 May.


UNESCO General Conference proclaimed the fourth week of May as  the International week of Art education. Week was marked for the first time from 21 to 27 May 2012 , during this Week it was underlined  the importance of Art education. World Conference on Art Education held in Lisbon in 2006 and Seoul in 2010, identified some guidelines for the development. Seoul Agenda for Development of educational quality could add art to the action plan, which is available for all Member States. Now it's time to accelerate its implementation.


Why Art education is important:

International week of Art education aims to raise international awareness about the importance of Art education and to strengthen cooperation and promote cultural diversity, intercultural dialogue and social cohesion.

To explain why art education is important, UNESCO General Director Irina Bokova wrote:

"Now, when people are looking for new ways to peace and development, we can unlock the potential of culture and cultural diversity. Art education is one of the keys to unlocking this potential for the benefit of all. Art and creativity should take its rightful place at the heart of society. "
