The International Roundtable Discussion on Arts Education took place in Moscow

The International Roundtable on “Problems and Prospects of Arts Education in the Context of Contemporary Culture” took place on 25 March 2014 in Moscow. The event held in the Scientific Pedagogical Library named after K.D. Ushinsky of the Russian Academy of Education (RAE). The Roundtable was organized by the Institute of Arts Education of the RAE, the Scientific Pedagogical Library named after K.D. Ushinsky of the RAE, Moscow State University of Culture and Arts, with the consultative support of the UNESCO Moscow Office for Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Moldova and the Russian Federation.

The Roundtable was organized on the results of the UNESCO/IFESCCO Pilot Project “Arts Education in the CIS Countries: Building Creative Capacities for 21st Century” (2009 - 2014). It is particularly noteworthy that this Roundtable discussion was held on the opening day of the Year of Culture in the Russian Federation. 

Mr. Vadim Demin, Academician, Secretary of the Department of Education and Culture of the Russian Academy of Education, Doctor of Arts, Professor and Mr. Dendev Badarch, Director of the UNESCO Moscow Office, UNESCO Representative in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, the Republic of Moldova and the Russian Federation welcomed participants of the Round Table. Greetings from Mr. Iksanov Anatoly, Executive Director of the Intergovernmental Foundation for Educational, Scientific and Cultural Cooperation of the CIS (IFESCCO) and Mr. Pshenko Konstantin, Deputy Head of the expert- analytical department of the Interparliamentary Assembly of the CIS Member-states, the Secretary of the IPA CIS Permanent Commission on Culture, Information, Sport and Tourism have been presented by Mr. Sergey Aleschenok, IFESCCO Advisor.

Ms. Lyudmila Scholar, Director of the Institute of Arts Education of the RAE, Academician, Doctor of pedagogical sciences, Professor and Ms. Markarova Tamara, Director of Scientific Pedagogical Library named after K.D. Ushinsky of the RAE, PhD in Philology opened the event.

Leading experts from the CIS countries in the field of arts education, representatives of the Ministries of Culture, Education and Science, teachers and representatives of arts education system of the Russian Federation and abroad took part in the event.

Along with the discussion of the problems and prospects of arts education in the CIS countries, the Programme of the Roundtable included a presentation of the information resource “Observatory on Arts Education in the CIS Member-States”, as well as a presentation of the Booklet “Strategic Prospects for the Development of Arts Education in the CIS Counries”, created in the framework of the UNESCO/IFESCCO Project.

An on-line conference with national coordinators from the CIS countries of the Observatory on Arts Education, as well as with representatives of arts education system of different regions of Russia and other countries has been organized.

Organization of this event contributed to the strengthening of the partnerships between the CIS countries in the field of arts education in order to preserve cultural diversity and national cultural priorities. The reports of speakers emphasized the importance of arts education in the enculturation of the younger generation and the development of the creative potential of modern society, updating and promoting of research on the basis of national strategies for the development of arts education and intergovernmental cooperation. They also highlighted the role of innovative forms of promotion and broadcast of experience of arts education and education through art in today's international environment, taking into account the outcome document of the Second UNESCO World Conference on Arts Education “Seoul Agenda: Development of Arts Education” ( 2010).

The Roundtable participants stressed the importance and role of the created bilingual information resource “Observatory on Arts Education in the CIS Member-States” and its potential in contributing to the modern socio-cultural problems.
