Preservation of National Identity

In March, 1958, upon the decision of the Government of Armenia, the Choral Society of Armenia was founded then, later, in 1987, renamed to Musical Society of Armenia.

In recent years, the Society has played an active organizational role in the musical life of the republic - concerts, recitals, commemoration evenings, festivals, competitions of Armenian songs and national instruments, ensembles of national instruments, wind instruments etc...

Recently, the Second All-Armenian Contest-Festival of Ensembles of National Instruments, organized on the initiative of the Musical Society of Armenia, took place in Yerevan.

The current contest-festival was dedicated to the 27th anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Armenia and the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the Musical Society of Armenia. The Chairman of the Musical Society of Armenia, Honored Artist of the Republic of Armenia, Professor Davit Ghazaryan, mentioned in his welcome speech: “Continuous attention to the ensembles of national instruments is one of the most important tasks in the educational policy of our culture. This contest-festival of ensembles of national instruments is the first since the day of the declaration of the independence of the Republic. And it is not by chance that all regions of Armenia, the capital Yerevan and the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic are represented in it”.

The organizers have repeatedly mentioned that this event targets mainly the preservation of the national identity and the performing traditions. Contest-festival was held in two age categories - junior and senior. Twenty children and adult music groups took part in this “exhibition-performance”.

Ensemble of National Instruments of Alexander Spendiaryan Yerevan Special Music School (artistic director Nune Danielyan) and Eduard Poghosyan National Instruments Orchestra of the Gyumri City Palace of Children's and Youth Art (artistic director Varuzhan Poghosyan) were awarded with the main prizes.
