In memoriam of great Gohar Gasparyan

Sixth biennial Yerevan contest of solo singers was dedicated to the 90th  anniversary of the Armenian prominent singer, People's Artist of the USSR, USSR and RA State Prize Laureate, the owner of fine lyric coloratura soprano - Gohar Gasparyan.


The contest was held by the Ministry of Culture, the Musical society of Armenia, National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre named after Al. Spendiaryan and Yerevan State Conservatory named after Komitas. Armenian jeweler designer Arman Davtyan, who is famous by his nickname “Nur”, has created specifically for this contest a sole handmade award depicting the Armenian capital letter “G”- the initial of great Gohar’s name. In addition to the three main awards, the organizers of the contest have also set special awards: “Fore hope”, “For the best performance of the opera repertoire of G.Gasparyan”, “To the 135th  anniversary of Armen Tigranyan - for the best performance of Anush’s aria from the opera Anush”, as well as “Best Accompanist” etc.

This year around 50 young singers took part in the contest. Most of them are students and graduates of the Armenia’s main center for music education – the State Conservatory. The repertoire included not only Western European opera arias, Russian and Armenian composers, but also Armenian folk and spiritual songs, romances. The jury consisted of prominent professors of the Conservatory and well-known Opera soloists. 

The auditions of the first two rounds took place in the hall of the Opera Studio of the Conservatory, the third round - in the Opera House, with the performance of one aria with piano, and another aria with symphony orchestra of the mentioned theater. On December 14, right on the singer’s birthday, an right on the stage, where she had her brilliant career- at the scene of the National Academic Theater of Opera and Ballet named after Alexander Spendiaryan, the closing ceremony of the contest and the award ceremony as well as gala-concert, took place.

This Contest attracted great interest among musicians. We can confidently state that this contest, which was held under the bright name of the Armenian opera stars, will become another important step forward for all participants, striving for perfection. This will be another step forward towards ideals of vocal art, which Gohar Gasparyan devoted her entire performing and teaching activities.
