Day of Toumanian’s Fairy Tale 

It has been already ninth year, as the Armenian International Center of the Union of Puppet Artists (UNIMA-Armenia), in association with the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Armenia, holds the International Festival of Puppet Theaters titled “Day of Toumanian’s Fairy Tale”, which takes place in the Armenian Lori region. This festival had already become a nice tradition and a long-expected cultural event not only for the peopleof Lori, but also forthe residents of other regions in Armenia.


This festival took its well-deservedrank among other world festivals of puppet theaters. Evidence of thisis the year-by-year increasing interest tothe Lori festivalfrom the overseas puppet theatres. The past eight festivals recorded participation of world-famous theatres from various countries as well as participation of prominent puppet artists from all over the world.

The idea of this Festival belongs to the “UNIMA-Armenia”. It, first of all, contributes in an aesthetic education of the future generation. The Festival is designed to encourage the cultural life in the Armenian rural regions as well as to develop the Armenian puppet art and to introduce the young artists. Another task of the festival is to popularize the immortal masterpieces of the genuine sun of Lori – the great Armenian writer Hovhannes Toumanian. Thanks to this festival Toumanian’s works are largely present in the puppet theatres of 95 countries worldwide. The current festival is dedicated to the 145th  Anniversary of  Toumanian’s birthday. This year Lori hosted theaters and artists from Russia, France, Italy, Ukraine, Iran, Turkmenistan, as well as from Artsakh. 

As was already became tradition, the Festival began from lay a wreath on the monument of Toumanian in his motherland village - Desegh. The official opening ceremony of the Festival took place on September 6 in the Charles Aznavour’s Palace in Vanadzor. Where upon theatricalize outdoor walking party took place in the streets of Vanadzor city. Puppet scenes were introduced in Vanadzor as well as in other towns and villages of the Lori region. The several master classes on puppet theatric and puppet making arts were introduced during the days of the Festival.  Other events like special “club evenings”, sightseeing tours and film shows took place in this framework. The official closing of the Festival as well as prize presentation ceremony took place in the Yerevan’s State Puppet Theatre named after Hovhannes Toumanian.

The Chairman of the “UNIMA-Armenia” Armen Safarian in his speech described the “Day of the Toumanian’s Fairy Tale” as an excellent opportunity to grant children with the fantastic holiday, holiday of kindness, tolerance and peace”.
