 85 years later A look at the past from the futureBeginning – September 1929... According to the decision of the Committee on the public education of the Soviet Republic an initial department with its 60 students was separated from the newly established Conservatory and first children's four-year specialized musical school was based in Yerevan.

In 1930, 4 rooms were assigned to the school in a building on Shahumyan Street, which is located near by the famous market "Ghantar." After the first-time admission, number of pupils had reached 127. 11 teachers had worked in the school.  

That’s how the musical school started its operation, which in 1930 had named after great armenian composer Alexander Spendiaryan. In the 1930-31 academic year, the school had 257 students who had been studying in two main branches - piano and strings. The school had given its first 12 graduates. During 1937 to 1992 period the school was 7-yeared and since 1992 it had become 10-yeared. In the ranks ofthe first graduates ofthe school were great people like Arno Babadjanian, Alexander Haroutyunian, Edvard Mirzoyan, Ghazaros Sarian, AdamKhudoyan, Edgar Hovhannisian, Robert Amirkhanyan, Gagik Hovunts, Alexander Achemyan, Jivan Ter-Tadevosyan and others. Many graduates had joined famous musical collectives of the republic, teach in the Yerevan State Conservatory, music schools of the capital and the country, music and art schools. This traditionof the school passed from generation to generation, and every year the ranks of the best musicians are refilled with new names like pianists Vardan Mamikonyan, Vahan Martirosyan, LilitGrigoryan, saxophonists Koryun Asatryan and Hayrapet Arakelyan, clarinetist Mher Mnatsakanyan.

Today about 1000 students study in this school. Education is based on five-year, seven-year and ten-year educational programs. There are branches of various musical instruments, academic and pop singing, various ensembles, orchestras and a jazz band.

85 years old musical school with youth ful enthusiasm carries out its noble mission, absorbing together the brilliant traditions of the past and the obligations of the present, the aspirations and enthusiasm of the youth and the efforts and wisdom of the elderly…

This is our school- our cradle of the first musical steps and dreams, with saturated week days and with a variety of different musical events and unforgettable concert evenings...

Tomorrow- the future of the school will consist in one phrase of a brilliant German philosopher:"Without music life would have beena mistake...". The 100th anniversary is not so far- the school willre-open its doors to hundreds of children and will lead them in a big and bright world of music. It will continue writing new pages of its chronic lean being proud of its student’s new victories…

And today... Today we are turning over the 85th page of the history of our musical forge and proudly saying, "Happy birthday, our favorite music school n.1 named after Alexander Spendiaryan!"
